ZANZIBAR

Zanzibar is a tropical island in the Indian Ocean. It is situated about 25 miles from the east coast of Tanzania. Zanzibar is made up of two islands, Pemba and Unguja. Unguja is about 24 miles wide and 50 long.

Zanzibar is located near to the equator. The climate is warm and humid all year around. The rainy seasons are in November, with short rains, and in April/May with long rains. It never rains a whole day.

Zanzibar is a low/ middle income country with an annual income per capita of US $936.

On Zanzibar there are more than 300 hotels, and the number of tourists was increasing up until 2020 with more than 500.000 in 2019. Of course, the worldwide Covidvirus has had an enormous impact on the amount of tourists/ and on the income for Zanzibar in 2020.People survive as well as possible, by fishing, farming and taking care for their families.

Zanzibar has a lot to offer to tourists: a rich culture, Stone Town is a World Heritagesite, there are endless white beaches with palms and the people are friendly welcoming.

On the island there are several organisations that work on environmental issues: like collecting trash in beach clean ups, recycling and upcycling glass and plastic, ocean conservation, permaculture, organic agriculture and sustainable tourism.
